Welcome to The Creative Desk: My Journey from Employee to Entrepreneur

I am sitting here pinching myself as I write my first blog for The Creative Desk…but first let me introduce myself – I’m Sharon Bornheim, an ex-South-African who has made the beautiful (and sometimes sunny) UK my home. I am a creative individual who had a late diagnosis of ADHD – so much makes sense now… 😊. My personal journey is not as riveting as a Jilly Cooper novel, but if you are an aspiring entrepreneur, coach, creative, startup, or small or large business, you may find some golden nuggets in my simple story that will inspire you to pursue your own dreams, no matter how daunting they may seem.

The Leap of Faith

Leaving a secure, full-time job to start my own business was one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever made. Working for someone else had its comforts – a steady salary and a structured environment. However, I always felt a persistent tug at the back of my mind: “What if I could channel this creativity and expertise into my own venture?”

I realised that I was trading my creativity for a salary, which began to feel limiting. I started dreaming about the freedom to pursue my vision, choose my projects, and build something that was entirely mine. With the encouragement of my family and friends, I decided to take the plunge.

The Privilege and the Panic

One of the biggest advantages I had was leaving my job with a client already wanting to sign up. This provided a sense of security as I ventured into the unknown. However, no amount of preparation could fully eliminate the fear and trepidation of starting something new.

The initial days were a mix of exhilaration and panic. I had to jump in feet first and swim with the tide. There were moments when I doubted my decision, questioning whether I had what it takes to succeed on my own. But with every small win, my confidence grew.

Lessons Learned and Mistakes Made

Overcommitting:
In my eagerness to prove myself, I took on too many projects at once, leading to burnout and compromised quality. I learned the importance of setting realistic expectations and managing my time effectively.

Under-pricing:
Initially, I underpriced my services, undervaluing my expertise and experience. It took time to understand my worth and adjust my pricing accordingly.

Wins and Positives

Building Relationships:
One of the most rewarding aspects has been building relationships with my clients. Being directly involved in every project has allowed me to create more meaningful and impactful work.

Creative Freedom:
The freedom to choose projects that truly excite me has reignited my passion for creativity. I’m no longer confined by the constraints of a corporate environment.

My Encouragement to You

To anyone considering a similar leap, here’s my advice: Don’t be afraid to take risks. It’s natural to feel fear and uncertainty, but these feelings are often the precursors to growth. Surround yourself with a supportive network and believe in your abilities. Remember, every entrepreneur starts somewhere, and mistakes are just stepping stones to success.

The Ups and Downs

The journey hasn’t been without its ups and downs. There have been sleepless nights, stressful deadlines, and moments of self-doubt. But there have also been incredible highs – seeing a project come to life, receiving positive feedback from clients, and watching The Creative Desk grow.

The Joy of Growth

The joy and excitement of watching The Creative Desk evolve have been unparalleled. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities, and I’m continually learning and adapting. As I was preparing for our official launch, I was filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment at what was already achieved.
